In 1912, for $1,800 difference, the Wales family swapped this building at 13 West Walworth Street for 6 acres on the west side of Elkhorn, where the family took up residence. At the time the building was occupied by Sperry Bros. Restaurant and State Long Distance Telephone Company. After adding a candy-making operation to their business, Sperry Bros. sold the restaurant in 1919. During the next 50 years both the restaurant and building changed hands several times, but in it's 1953 transformation the name of the restaurant was changed to the Elk.
Darrell Wales started his restaurant career in the mid 50's and purchased the Elk in 1971. Darrell, his wife Jackie and their family operated the business until 1991, when two of their sons, Ken & Brad, partnered and became the new owners.
Ken and Brad operate the Elk today and are proud to welcome you to the Elk Restaurant in the historic Wales Building.
